Truth Be Told: Tuesday Night Non-Fiction Book Discussion

Tuesday, January 29th, 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the Board Room
cover of Hillbilly Elegy
January’s title is Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance.

Author J.D. Vance, a former marine and Yale Law School graduate, provides an account of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town that offers a broader, probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class. The disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for more than 40 years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Copies of the book are available at the Information Desk. Discussion moderated by Parul Kapur Hinzen, a journalist and literary critic whose writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal Europe, Esquire, GQ, New York Newsday, The American Book Review, Guernica, and Slate. She is a longtime member of the National Book Critics Circle. Registration not required.
