Some Assembly Required Maker Contest

Submissions: July 1 – August 1
Voting: August 3 – 22

Some Assembly Required logoWe are very excited to announce the first annual Collaboratory Summer Program, “Some Assembly Required,” which begins on July 1st. The program is a maker contest consisting of different categories with one grand prize.

The categories this year are:

  • Art – We will accept art in any medium (painting, drawing, digital, sculpture etc.), any size. Must be an original work. Non digital artwork may be photographed or scanned for submission. We will accept image files of any type and any resolution, but try for at least 300 DPI (dots per inch), as this will make your artwork look best on a digital screen.
  • B&W Photography – Must be an original work. We will accept digital or traditional photographs. Any aspect ratio is acceptable. Traditional photographs may be photographed or scanned for submission. We will accept image files of any type and any resolution, but try for at least 300 DPI (dots per inch), as this will make your artwork look best on a digital screen.
  • Color Photography – Must be an original work. We will accept digital or traditional photographs. Any aspect ratio is acceptable. Traditional photographs may be photographed or scanned for submission. We will accept image files of any type and any resolution, but try for at least 300 DPI (dots per inch), as this will make your artwork look best on a digital screen.
  • DIY – Must be an original creation. The DIY (which stands for “Do-it-Yourself” if you did not know) is a catch-all category that will cover anything that doesn’t explicitly fall under any other category. If you made it yourself, you can submit it here! Some examples could include a picnic table, a custom made guitar, flower arrangements, really almost anything!
  • Invention – Must be an original, working, invention. The submission photo/video for each invention must show it functioning.
  • Perler Beads – Creations can be, but do not have to be “original”; designs made from plans or modeled after popular characters/art are fine. Any sized Perler Bead creation is acceptable.
  • Textile Arts – We will accept any kind of textile art (sewing projects, custom made clothing, quilting, etc.). Must be a finished work.
  • Videography – Must be an original work, 10 minutes or fewer. Some examples of suitable videography submissions include (but are not limited to) skits, music videos, video collages, sports highlight reels, and acting monologues.

How To Enter

Submit your entry by emailing wplcollaboratory@gmail.com with “Some Assembly Required Entry” in the subject line and a photo or video attachment of your work. Videos will be accepted for the Invention category and the Videography category. We will also accept links to your personal YouTube videos as long as you can prove that it is your video and your account. When preparing your submission, be sure to include a short write up that helps voters understand the piece or what the item is/does/is made from etc.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to accept in-person submissions this year.

Prizes

A winner from each field will be chosen through voting via the Library’s social media and text messaging. In the event of a tie, Collaboratory staff will be the tie breakers. The winners of each category will receive a special laser cut prize, and the project that receives the most votes overall will receive the grand prize: a Collaboratory-made trophy along with a gift card to the Wallingford business of their choice.
