*Angela’s Ashes. A humorous and heartwarming adaptation of Frank McCourt’s hugely popular, Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir about growing up in the dire poverty of Dublin in the 1930s and ’40s, with a large family, a ne’er-do-well father, and an indomitable mother.

*American Beauty. Kevin Spacey is Lester Burnham, a harried Everyman whose midlife awakening is the spine of the story. Annette Benning plays his wife. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture.

*Anna and the King. A gorgeous, nonmusical version of the story told in The King and I, starring Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-Fat.

*Anywhere But Here. Forty-something Adele August (Susan Sarandon) is every adolescent’s nightmare: over-dressed, always "on," more colorful kid than reliable mom. In contrast, 14-year-old Ann (Natalie Portman) yearns for stability, roots, understated hues.

*Burn the Floor. A treat for fans of ballroom dancing: great dancing, terrific music, and a splendid show.

*End of the Affair. Finely wrought rendition of Graham Greene’s (reportedly autobiographical) novel about a WW2 love affair that takes a surprising turn when the married woman (Julianne Moore) has an unexplained change of heart. Ralph Fiennes also stars.

*Erin Brockovich. Julia Roberts stars as Erin Brockovich, a feisty young mother who fought for justice any way she knew how.

*Girl Interrupted. Vivid adaptation of Susanna Kaysen’s autobiographical book (set in the late 1960s) about a girl (Winona Ryder) who enters a mental institution at the age of eighteen.

*Green Mile. Tom Hanks stars in this faithful adaptation of Stephen King’s best-selling novel.

*The Hurricane. Denzel Washington is riveting in the story of boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter.

*Mumford. A psychologist (named Mumford) wanders into a small town (named Mumford) and suddenly fits seamlessly into everybody’s rhythms and routines. He balances a no-nonsense approach with a keen ability to listen sincerely to everyone’s problems.

*My Dog Skip. This boy-and-his-dog movie, a charming family film, is, as one of the characters so aptly puts it, "a heartbreak waiting to happen." Kevin Bacon and Frankie Muniz star.

*Mystery Alaska. Russell Crowe stars in this inspirational film about a small-town hockey team that takes on a NHL team.

*Soul Food. When Chicago-based black matriarch Hall, the glue that holds her family together, falls ill, grandson Hammond does his best to step in. A poignant story that is honest and heartwarming.

*Still Crazy. This critically acclaimed comedy follows the hilarious exploits of a 70s rock band that attempts a comeback after 20 years.

*Sweet and Lowdown. A Woody Allen diversion about a fictional jazz guitarist of the 1930s, Emmet Ray (brilliantly played by Sean Penn), who’s a musical genius but a rotten human being.

*The Talented Mr. Ripley. An unscrupulous (and penniless) young man accepts a job from an American millionaire to find his wastrel son in Italy and convince him to come home. Instead, Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) befriends the young man and aspires to live his carefree life . . . at any price.

*Topsy-Turvy. Fascinating, intimate portrait of Gilbert and Sullivan, and the time in which they lived, focusing on their peccadilloes and personalities, and the process of turning their latest ideas into the operetta masterpiece The Mikado.

*A Walk on the Moon. It’s the summer of 1969. Neil Armstrong has walked on the moon, and Woodstock is about to happen nearby. While her husband is away on business, Pearl (Diane Lane) is cautiously receptive to the seductions of a hippie salesman (Viggo Mortensen) who offers the adventure and passion that Pearl sacrificed to young pregnancy and marriage.
