Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood attended grade school and Smith College together and spent nine months on a grand tour of Europe in 1910. Then, bored with society luncheons and chaperoned balls, and not yet ready for marriage, they went off to teach the children of homesteaders in a remote schoolhouse on the Western Slope of Colorado. Author Dorothy Wickenden, executive editor of The New Yorker, is also the granddaughter of Dorothy Woodruff. Drawing on letters, oral histories and period documents, she is able to recount her grandmother’s adventures and give us insight to what life was really like in the early days of the 20th century wild West.
