Friday Night Flicks Presents: The Runaways

Runaways movie posterFriday, August 6th at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room

The film follows two friends, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself—and so do its two leads. The film chronicles Joan and Cherie's tumultuous relationship on and off stage, as the band starts to break out. Rated R.

Cinema Club Presents: Summer Hours

Tuesday, August 3rd at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room

Summer Hours movie posterWidely hailed by critics as 2009’s best film, Summer Hours is the great contemporary French filmmaker Olivier Assayas’s most personal film to date. Three siblings, played by Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling, and Jérémie Renier, must decide what to do with the country estate and objects they’ve inherited from their mother. From this simple story, Assayas creates a nuanced, exquisitely made drama about the material of globalized modern living. Naturalistic and unsentimental yet suffused with genuine warmth, this is that rare film that pays respect to family by treating it with honesty. Not Rated.

Discussion to follow movie. Refreshments will be served.
